Pratt & Whitney is celebrating after winning its first long-term maintenance contract with an airline to overhaul rival CFM International's CFM56 engines.
It has sealed a Fleet Management Programme deal – worth $80 million over 10 years – to overhaul and maintain the engines on Air Jamaica's 17 CFM56-5 powered Airbus A320/321s.
The Caribbean carrier became P&W's first FMP customer in 1996 to support the PW4000s that power its A310s.
The work will be carried out at P&W's Norway Engine Center at Stavanger Airport. With the new contract, it will become the launch customer for the CFM56-5B at this shop.
P&W now has over 2,600 installed engines and 40 customers working with FMPs or on other long-term service agreements.
