L-3 and Thales joint venture ACSS has gained certification to install its T2CAS and dual RCZ-852 Mode S transponders on ATR 42/72-600 aircraft.

The T2CAS safety avionics product combines a performance-based terrain awareness warning system with the TCAS 2000 traffic alert and collision avoidance system.

Royal Air Maroc will be the first carrier to receive an ATR-600 aircraft with the ACSS avionics systems.

ACSS says more than 60,000 units of its product are operating in commercial, corporate and military aircraft.

In March, the joint venture performed a flight test to demonstrate to the Federal Aviation Administration that its XS-950 Mode S transponder was compliant with the future ADS-B mandate for the agency's NextGen airspace initiatives. The flight test, conducted on a Boeing 767 operated by UPS, was in support of ACSS's supplemental type certification submittal, due later this summer.

UPS, JetBlue and US Airways are the first three airlines that will install the transponders, to aircraft including Airbus A320s, A330s, Boeing 747s, 757s, 767s and MD-11s.
