Hawker Beechcraft has implemented a safety management system ahead of a requirement for all manufacturers doing business in Europe to have an SMS in place by 2013.

The Wichita-based airframer's vice-president of safety and certification, David Bernstorf, says an SMS requires commitment from everyone in the organisation.

"It means more than personal safety. It means looking at the risks in everything that we do, having pride in the work we do and developing an attitude of being more than just compliant to rules. This is an opportunity to generate change and also be a leader in the industry."
