Sandvik Coromant (hall 3, D6) is launching three geometries for its CoroDrill Delta C R854 product that it says will reduce splintering and help avoid delamination for carbonfibre reinforced plastic composites.

Supplied initially as part of Sandvik's Tailor Made programme, the drill technology begins with a fine carbide grain substrate and diamond coating, with the geometries designed for optimal results for carbonfibre reinforced plastic composite structures.

"We have a unique geometry for getting rid of delamination which is common when trying to drill carbonfibre reinforced plastic composite stacks in a single operation," says Sandvik. When drilling carbonfibre reinforced plastic composites friction and deflections in thin-walled parts can occur. The geometries are aimed at overcoming these issues as well.
