US start-up Super98 is launching aerodynamic drag reduction kits aimed at extending the life of Boeing MD-80s, MD-90s and 717s and improving their efficiency.

Formed in 2007, Super98 is currently offering a modification package for the MD-80 that reduces fuel consumption by 2%, says Bengt Olov Nas, vice-president sales and marketing Europe and Africa. The package comes in three sub-kits, which replace components such as slats, flaps and spoilers with more aerodynamic parts. Each kit takes one overnight to install.

"We are ready to start delivery now during the second half of 2009," says Nas. The company is seeking a launch customer. A second MD-80 package, available in 18 to 24 months, "promises another 2%" bringing total savings to 4%, says Nas. Packages for MD-90 and 717 will also be available in about two years.

"Some customers out there operating the MD-80 expect Airbus and Boeing to come up with new narrowbodies at some point," he says. "The Super98 modification kits allow them the option to prolong the service of their fleet until successor narrowbodies are introduced."
