The European Joint Aviation Authorities is set to certificate two CFM56 upgrades within the next three months as CFM International thinks over the possible go-ahead of further upgrade kits for the later generation engines based on the Tech56 technology programme.

Certification of the CFM56-5C/P-powered Airbus A340-300 Enhanced is expected in August, with JAA approval of the CFM56-5B acoustic upgrade package for the A321 due the following month. The improvements for the -5C/P include the advanced three-dimensional aerodynamic design high-pressure compressor and turbine first developed for the -5B/P, and will be available as upgrade kits for existing A340 operators and to purchasers of new A340-300s. CFM, which sees a potential market for 500 engines and upgrades, says initial kits will be available by year-end, while first deliveries of the -300 Enhanced start next February. Later in 2004, production of all CFM56-5C variants for the A340 will shift to the new -5C/P standard.

The acoustic upgrade kit, expected to be certificated in September, is to become available to A321 operators in October. The kit includes a core chevron nozzle and improved reverser in the nacelle, and is designed to cut noise levels to 10EPNdB below FAR 36 Stage 3 noise limits, allowing A321 operators to meet noise regulations being introduced from January 2006.

Trade studies are under way into upgrade kits for the CFM56-7B powering the Boeing Next Generation 737 and the -5B/P for the A320 family. Both would probably include three-dimensional design compressor blades, combustion chamber improvements and enhancements aimed at reducing cost and improving life, rather than performance.
