Australian digital content management and distribution company DCN and UK partner Watermark are targeting the regional aircraft market with the AeroTV in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. Developed by Perth, Western Australia-based DCN over the past 18 months, the partners say the lightweight low power-consumption AeroTV system is ideal for the retrofit market on aircraft with fewer than 100 seats.

"For an airline that carries 3.5 million passengers with half a dozen aircraft, the cost would be less than a tenth of a legacy IFE system," says DCN. Lighter than 3kg (6.6lb), the system would be installed on overhead screens rather than seatback displays - although it could be adapted for the latter - and would deliver DVD-quality films, video clips and audio. DCN is to form a joint venture company, AeroTV, with Watermark early next year. It says it is in talks with three European regional airlines and expects orders by March.
