Lufthansa says it is bewildered as to the reasons behind a bizarre incident at Mexico City during which a first-class passenger opened the upper-deck door of a taxiing Boeing 747-400 and jumped out.

The aircraft had been operating flight LH497 bound for Frankfurt at 21:40 on 28 February.

Lufthansa says that the aircraft had left the gate and was taxiing for departure when the incident occurred. The passenger left his seat and opened the exit door – causing the emergency slide to deploy.

"He escaped, but was caught by the airport authorities," says Lufthansa. "He seemed to be totally confused."

Security personnel conducted a precautionary search of the aircraft but found nothing untoward.
