The Rolls-Royce Pegasus, used in the British Aerospace Harrier McDonnell Douglas, can now be fitted with an enhanced high-reliability replacement inlet guide vane control system (IGVCS), thanks to a development by suppliers Hamilton Sundstrand.

The IGVCS is a flight-critical system comprising a dual-channel digital electronic control with hydro-mechanical back-up.

The electronic unit will now serve as the system's primary control instead of the previous system which comprised a hydro-mechanical unit only. The first production units will be shipped from Hamilton Sundstrand's Windsor Locks, Connecticut, headquarters this month.

Installed

The new system will initially be installed on US Marine AV-8BHarrier II Plus aircraft.

The company expects to produce several hundred units over the life of the programme which is likely to include retrofits for US Marine Corps aircraft and international military customers including air forces in the UK, India and Spain.
