Lockheed Martin has been given the go-ahead by the pentagon to begin the crucial next stage of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme after experts approved the progress to date on the company's concept demonstrator aircraft.

"We can now cut metal and begin the detailed design phase," says Dain Hancock, president of Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems.

"We are exactly where we planned to be. The design is in great shape."

Micky Blackwell, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Division chief, is equally bullish about the prospects of the company's design. "We are going to beat Boeing and McDonnell Douglas."
