DARPA's Peregrine project aims to demonstrate a small, low-cost, long-endurance unmanned interceptor with a high dash speed, capable of destroying unmanned air vehicles. The vehicle will loiter on a forward-mounted diesel propeller engine until a target is identified by off-board radar, then dash at 250kt (460km/h) or faster on an aft-mounted pulse jet, low-speed wing shells breaking off to reveal small high-speed wings. An infrared seeker will provide hit-to-kill targeting. Cormorant is a project to examine the feasibility of a sea- or submarine-launched UAV to provide close air support for vessels.
