Airbus has commenced assembly of Asiana Airlines’ first A380 aircraft, with delivery planned for the second quarter of 2014.
The South Korean carrier will be the 12th operator of the high capacity type, says Airbus.
Asiana ordered six A380s in January 2011, and plans to operate the type on key routes to the USA.
Asiana's A380s will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.
When Asiana takes delivery of the A380 South Korea will be come the first country with two operators of the type. Korean Air has seven A380s and orders for three additional aircraft.
According to Flightglobal’s Ascend Online database, Asiana operates 81 aircraft. It has orders for 39 aircraft, including a single A321, two A330-300s, 30 A350s, and six A380s.
