The first Airbus A319 Corporate Jetliner for the German government had its maiden flight on Saturday from the manufacturer's Finkenwerder factory in Hamburg. Sporting German air force colours, the "green" aircraft will be completed by Lufthansa Technik (LHT) and handed over to the ministry of defence's special mission wing in 2010.

LHT was selected in 2007 by Germany's federal office of defence technology and procurement to act as prime contractor for the modernisation of the medium-range fleet of the MoD's special mission wing, in a deal involving the purchase two VIP A319s and four Bombardier Global 5000s. The six aircraft will replace Germany's existing fleet of Challenger 601s from next year. Both 48-seat A319s will be delivered in 2010 following their completion in Hamburg and delivery of all four 12-seat Global 5000 jets is scheduled for 2011.
