Hawaiian Airlines received its first Airbus A321neo on 27 October, taking delivery of the aircraft from Airbus in Hamburg, Airbus announces.

The milestone brings the Honolulu-based carrier closer to making good on a goal to launch A321neo flights to the US mainland early next year.

Airbus announced the handoff by tweeting a photograph of the aircraft, registration N202HA, with a caption saying the aircraft joined Hawaiian's fleet.

Hawaiian had expected to receive its first A321neo earlier, but deliveries were delayed several months because the type's Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofans needed modifications, Hawaiian has said.

Hawaiian plans to first deploy an A321neo on 8 January between Maui and Oakland. It intends to operate the type between Maui and Portland starting 18 January, between Oakland and Lihue on 11 April, and between Los Angeles and Kona in summer 2018.

The company has orders for another 17 A321neos, it says.
