Pilatus is aiming to raise the bar for turboprop trainer performance with its new PC-21, due for certification in December 2004.

The Swiss manufacturer's objective is come as close to jet trainer characteristics as possible without breaking out of the turboprop price range.

Designed as an addition to the Pilatus family, not a replacement for successful programmes such as the PC-9, the new aircraft builds on a tradition of excellence and economy.

The PC-21 is more agile than other Pilatus trainers and more powerful with a 1,600shp (1,200kW) engine, giving it jet-like handling and a fly-by-wire feel.

"Aerodynamically the PC-21 is a higher performer than anything out there," says vice-president Kevin Smith.

In the cockpit, the PC-21's virtual avionics prototyping (VAP) system makes the aircraft ideal for learning as well as for instructing.

It can be quickly customised to a customer's specification.
