Rafael has formed a joint venture with Israel Aircraft Industries to develop a plasma thruster for microsatellites. The Israeli Hall effect thruster will replace the hydrazine thrusters used in low Earth-orbit satellites and will be demonstrated in 2008 on a 200kg (440lb)-plus satellite developed in co-operation with French space agency CNES.
