Poland has selected Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) to upgrade its Sukhoi Su-22 fighter-bombers. The deal will extend the type's operational life to 2015 and improve NATO compatibility.
The Eastern European nation will sign a contract shortly covering the upgrade of 20 aircraft which will be equipped by IAI's Lahav division with an Elta synthetic aperture radar, multifunction colour displays, a wide-angle head-up display and a new mission computer. Poland has 81 Su-22M4K single seaters and 18 two-seat Su-22UM3Ks. Lahav has teamed with Poland's PZL for the upgrade.
· The Czech Republic's supersonic fighter competition has moved forward, with the Czech cabinet asking the ministries involved to formulate a request for proposals for release by 30 September.
