Integration between national post offices and the major express operators is growing. Federal Express said it would co-operate on parcels and freight with La Poste, the French Post Office.

Meanwhile German press reports say Deutsche Post, the German post office, which last year bought two of the world's largest freight forwarders, Danzas and AEI, is preparing to increase its stake in DHL's non-US operations.

In early September, FedEx announced a plan to share ground deliveries with the US postal service - a move immediately criticised by UPS which delivers up to three quarters of domestic US parcels.
