Polyot has been selected by the Russian Government to manufacture the Antonov An-70 tactical transport, say sources within RAKA, the country's aerospace agency.

At present there is no order from the Russian air force and a decision will only be made after the yet-to-be-completed government flying trials. Polyot, better known for its space launcher work, repaired the badly damaged An-70 prototype that crashed in Omsk in January.

Omsk-based Polyot says starting serial production will cost roughly $100 million, part of which will come from the federal and regional budgets.

Financing proved a problem for rival bidder Aviakor, originally designated as An-70 manufacturer. Aviakor, however, could receive a share of the programme, probably wing production.
