A Proton M rocket with a Briz M upper stage has launched the SES 6 telecommunications satellite into orbit.
The launch from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, was conducted successfully, marking Proton's 385th launch.
Four of the five upper stage burns have been successfully completed as of time of press; the fifth will finish approximately 15h after launch.
SES 6 - a 6,100kg (13,500lb) satellite, will sit in geostationary orbit above South America, providing television and communications to North and South America. Proton was also used to launch SES satellites 1-4.
