Russian engine builder Perm Motors is developing an increased-thrust version of the Aviadvigatel PS-90 turbofan that will power the Ilyushin Il-96-400T freighter.
Dubbed the PS-90A1, the engine will be rated at 38,500lb thrust (171kN), 3,300lb more than the basic PS-90A powering the four-engined Il-96-300 widebody. The stretched -400T derivative has been ordered by Russian cargo airlines Atlant-Soyuz and Volga-Dnepr. Perm commercial director Oleg Korolyev says the thrust increase is achieved by increasing rotor speed.
Alterations include a new fan incorporating wider-chord blades; a “second-generation” noise-suppression kit; and a lower-emissions combustion chamber. The existing engine’s operating temperatures and time between overhauls will be retained.
The new fan design will retain a bandage, or shroud, ring, says Korolyev, adding that a further improved fan eliminating the bandage ring is already being tested and could be ready in three years’ time for application on all PS-90 versions. An earlier attempt to design a ringless fan failed as the required new technology was not yet available, he adds.
Perm continues to work on improving the PS-90’s hot section. “We are introducing a set of measures for reduction of the engine’s thermal tension,” says Korolyev. “These include a reduction in the temperature of gases entering the turbine and introduction of a new cooling system with higher airflow.”
If the Russian government’s planned revival of civil aviation production works out, Perm should manufacture between 100 and 120 new PS-90A engines a year, starting in 2007. In 2005, Perm plans to produce 22 new engines and upgrade 66 already-built examples to the new production standard during major overhauls.
