PZL-Mielec is flight testing an aerodynamically improved version of its M-93 Iryda jet trainer, to be known as the M-96. The modifications include new leading-edge root extensions and vortex generators on the wings, and an extension to the tail fin to improve longitudinal stability.

While Mielec is releasing little information, sources close to the programme say that the aircraft can now be flown steadily at angles of attack of 25-26í, while its minimum speed has been cut to 100kt (185km/h). The aircraft's controls have also become lighter.

The next stage of the upgrade will be to integrate a new avionics suite from Sextant Avionique of France, and to add Fowler flaps and slats. The upgraded aircraft was flown on 21 December, but Mielec has remained tight-lipped about the programme because of previous adverse publicity.

The Polish air force's 11 I-22 and M-93 Irydas were grounded early in 1996 following a fatal crash which the air force blamed on technical problems.
