Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker says that the airline intends to use its Airbus A380s for “increasing frequencies to our current network”, and that routes to Paris, Frankfurt, New York and “destinations in the Far East” are among those on which the double-deckers will be operated.
The Doha-based Oneworld member is set to receive three A380s next month, and will first deploy the type on its Doha-London Heathrow service. From 17 June, the aircraft will replace an Airbus A340 on Qatar’s route to the UK capital.
Qatar has a total of 10 A380s on order – “a very limited number”, says Al Baker – and deliveries run through 2017.
“We will receive it over a period of time, so it will give us the ability not to dump capacity, but to grow… as the demand rises,” says Al Baker, who indicates that two of the A380s will be assigned to the New York route.
“We are exactly getting to fulfil our plans without disrupting the capacity in the market,” he adds.
