Lack of quality candidates is one of the most serious problems affecting recruitment, reveals a Flight International survey of employers.

Fifty-six per cent of respondents cite an absence of good-quality candidates as the top factor affecting recruitment of staff, above increased competition for employees.

Jobs are available, but companies believe the best candidates are employed elsewhere. Eighty-nine per cent of those surveyed say that over the past year the number of positions for which they were recruiting had increased, but 75% say availability of suitable candidates has decreased.

Online applications are seen as the way forward by recruiters, the survey also suggests. The web is the most frequently used recruitment advertising method by companies surveyed.
