While travelling domestically in the UK recently I have noticed that identification before check-in or boarding is not always required.

So to fly from London to Edinburgh you do not require an ID, but to fly to Amsterdam you need a valid passport.

In the USA everyone flying needs a valid photo ID (for example, a driver's licence) to board regardless of destination.

There is obviously not any passenger profiling going on in the UK for domestic flights - and it is simple for anyone to book a flight under a pseudonym. Pre-9/11, the USA had the same attitude - maybe there is a lesson there.
