Ostend, the Belgian airport populated by ageing jet-powered freight aircraft, has banned the operation of all non-Stage 3 Boeing 707 and McDonnell Douglas DC-8s of more than 28 years old. The ban took effect on 1 January. The decision follows growing environmental protest against the rising number of aircraft from Third World countries, banned elsewhere in Europe, using Ostend as an alternative.
