Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has introduced a three-month air communications trial at remote Jandakot Airport, matching a successful one at Ayers Rock, where small private aircraft frequently mix with much larger commercial types such as Boeing 737s.

The authority said at the time that the trial was begun because of unspecified in-flight "incidents" that had taken place in recent years at Ayers Rock because of the mix of traffic operating there.

Richard Yates, CASA assistant director, aviation safety standards, says the trial at Ayers Rock "helped pilots maintain safe separation in the air and avoid confusion on the ground."
