THE ROYAL AIR FORCE has ordered the Skyforce Avionics Skymap II global-positioning-system (GPS) moving-map displays to equip the British Aerospace Hawks of 100 Sqn and those of the Red Arrows aerobatic-display team.

The contract, worth around £50,000 ($78,000), follows a six-month in-service evaluation carried out by the RAF.

The first of 22 units for 100 Sqn and 15 for the Red Arrows was due for delivery at the end of August,

The Skymap II is being used for a rising number of military applications, says Chichester, UK-based Skyforce. The unit provides a complete Jeppesen aeronautical-database overlay on to a cartographic image. It will be mounted above the Hawk's attitude indicator.

The Skymap II's operating software and database can be upgraded continually by replacing the unit's data cartridge.
