Israeli company Rafael is upgrading its Spice satellite/inertial navigation bomb guidance kit to achieve greater range and accuracy.

The effort – which has been accelerated following the recent war in Lebanon – is aimed at meeting the operational requirements of the Israeli air force and the foreign air forces that have purchased the kit, which features deployable wings. Rafael sources say the kit is being tested on the company’s range in the Negev desert as part of the upgrade programme. The basic Spice is used on MK-84 2,000lb (4,400kg) bombs and gives the weapon a range of over 60km (32nm). This version is operational with the air force and has been used in combat.
