FLIR Systems (C500) is demonstrating what looks like the Johnny Five robot from the film Short Circuit, but this one is interested in “output” not “input”.
The company’s ThermoVision Ranger, with its two eye-like cameras, is designed to keep an eye on everything around it, whatever the weather. Its primary purpose is border protection, but it lends itself to all types of surveillance.
Featuring both visible and infrared (IR) cameras, the system even has a mapping facility and laser rangefinder. Combined with a GPS locator the Ranger not only shows you what it is looking at, but can pinpoint the object on a map too.
The IR camera can see objects up to 10km (6 miles) away even in smoke, light fog and haze, while the visible light and laser range finder can peer out to 20km.
Andrew Teich, FLIR’s president, imaging systems, says: “The Ranger system can be ground or vehicle mounted and can be remotely controlled too. It is IP addressable so that images can be viewed and the camera controlled over the internet.
“The UAE currently has 42 Rangers deployed along its border and it comes in a retractable, environmentally-sealed housing that protects the unit when it is not deployed.”
