Raytheon Systems and Thomson-CSF have signed a SFr393 million ($290 million)contract with the Swiss defence procurement agency to implement the second and third phases of the FLORAKO air defence system upgrade.

The system replaces the FLORIDA, which was supplied in the 1960s by Hughes Aircraft, now a part of Raytheon Systems. Switzerland selected the consortium in 1997 to provide new radars and renovate communications and command and control centres.

Raytheon is to provide the system architecture and integration, as well as new hardware and software for command and control. Thomson-CSF will provide new primary and secondary surveillance radars, new software for the command and control centres and integrate the Swiss Taktisches Flieger Radar mobile air defence centres into the overall system.

Oerlikon-Contraves will act as subcontractor to Thomson-CSF to modify the radar sites. Siemens Switzerland will subcontract to Raytheon to provide data and voice communications equipment.
