Raytheon is bidding to participate in a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) programme that will study alternative approaches to laser-based counter-Manpads (man-portable air defence systems) to protect commercial airliners from missile attacks. The US manufacturer will propose its Vigilant Eagle ground-based high-power microwave system, which uses a directed electromagnetic pulse to scramble a shoulder-fired missile’s guidance system.
