A Cessna Citation X business jet owned and piloted by Steve Fossett broke the US transcontinental record (East to West Coast) for private aircraft on 18 September, flying at an average speed of 516kt (954km/h). The journey from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Diego, California, lasted 3h 29 mins and 5 sec, beating the previous fastest crossing held by a Gulfstream V, which averaged 465kt. The record is the third in seven months for Fossett, who in February and April clinched the title in his Citation X for the fastest US West to East Coast flight for private aircraft and "Around the World Record for Medium Weight Aircraft", respectively.
