BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman have started flight tests on separate directed infrared countermeasures systems on commercial widebodies. The companies have less than two months to prove the commercial viability of laser-based countermeasure systems and obtain US Federal Aviation Administration certification under Phase 2 of a demonstration funded by the Department of Homeland Security.
