Rockwell Collins has received production approval for its Miniature Precision Lightweight Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver Engine (MPE-S), a jam-resistant, secure GPS receiver.

The MPE-S is one of the first product applications to be cleared for production that incorporates the Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM). This, in turn, was granted production approval earlier this year and will provide the basis for a wide range of jam-resistant GPS products.

The MPE-S is the first GPS receiver to obtain production approval for GPS Receiver Application Module (GRAM), SAASM and Small Serial Interface form-factor guidelines. Collins says deliveries of MPE-S will begin soon, with production deliveries set for next February.

SAASM is mandated for use in all US military GPS receivers from October 2002, and is designed to enhance navigation security by incorporating a next-generation Precise Positioning Service security module. The SAASM is a tamper-resistant, multi-chip security module which can combine with other components and software into a complete GPS receiver.
