Rockwell Collins is to provide displays and processors to upgrade US Army special operations helicopters under the Common Avionics Architecture (CAAS) programme. The upgrade will provide the 160th Special Operations Air Regiment with common avionics for its Boeing MH-47 Chinooks, McDonnell Douglas A/MH-6 Little Birds and Sikorsky MH-60 Black Hawks. Flight tests will begin in mid-2003. The avionics include four 150 x 200mm (6 x 8in) liquid-crystal displays, two general-purpose processors and two control/display units. The initial CAAS contract is worth $40 million.
