Rockwell Collins has introduced a digital replacement solution for its tape-based legacy overhead in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems.
The so-called digital media producer, a head-end replacement for video tape reproducers, "is the ideal solution" for 1,600 in-service, first-generation PAVES IFE systems flying on single-aisle aircraft today, according to Rockwell Collins.
"The plug-and-play unit offers a quick solution for modernising the cabin IFE without overhauling the entire system. It addresses the need for airlines to move to a more reliable, higher-quality digital platform while mitigating decreasing hi-8 cassette availability."
It will be available early next year.
