Rolls-Royce is set to start 18 months of test flights on the Eurojet EJ200 engine at the end of this month under the joint BAE Systems/RAF Case White test programme for the UK's Eurofighter Typhoon.

The Bristol, UK-based military engines division is also beginning tests on a life-extension version of the engine. Eurojet, which consists of Italy's Avio, Germany's MTU and Spain's ITP as well as R-R, aims to complete tests of the full operational clearance (FOC) version of the engine by the end of the year. "The FOC will have a 1,600h life compared with 400h for entry into service standard," says Nick Durham, R-R's EJ200 programme director.

R-R has completed tests on full authority digital engine control unit on the 6,500lb-thrust (29kN) Adour 951 powering the BAE Hawk New Development Aircraft at the South African air force's test flight and development centre in Overberg near Cape Town. The company says it has completed 37 flights, testing the surge protection system and there have been "no reported issues". Hot-and-high tests start later this month.
