Rolls-Royce has launched two strategic partnerships to expand the work of the joint materials technology centre at the UK's University of Birmingham.

They focus on casting technology and process modelling, with the goal of "highly instrumented" production-scale furnaces producing single-crystal turbine blades.

The partnership includes software house ESI-Group, IBM and OCF and chip manufacturer AMD. A new laboratory has been set up in the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Net-Shape Manufacturing at the university.
