Rolls-Royce and the US-based Chromalloy Gas Turbine are to form two new engine repair and specialist coatings joint ventures, employing around 340 people with net investment of £44 million ($67 million).

Turbine Surface Technologies, due to launch next year, will provide advanced technology coatings for R-R turbine components on a new site close to R-R's Derby, UK, headquarters.

The second venture, Turbine Repair Technologies, will be based at a nearby Chromalloy plant and offer component repair services on RB211, Tay and Trent family powerplants from next month.

R-R, which is aiming to expand its range of aftermarket services, regards the Chromalloy tie-up as "a significant development".

The US company, based in San Antonio, Texas, and a subsidiary of Sequa Corp, is a leading independent supplier in the commercial jet engine component aftermarket.
