Romania is to upgrade 24 of its licence-manufactured Eurocopter Pumas with Israeli sensors and anti-tank missiles.

The helicopters are to be equipped with the Rafael NT-D fibre-optic guided anti-tank missile along with a version of the Litening targeting and designation pod. The programme is being implemented as part of a wider upgrade of the helicopter by Elbit.

Romania has been looking at licence manufacturing the Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter, but financing for this deal has proved difficult to secure.

Elbit, with Romanian manufacturers, is preparing the upgraded Puma prototype and series update due to begin next year.
