Etihad Airways and its Abu Dhabi hub are getting ready for the Grand Prix circus to descend on them next month for this year's round of the Formula 1 world championship.

"This is our flagship sponsorship event," said Vijay Poonoosamy, Etihad's vice-president international and public affairs.

"The Grand Prix has put Etihad and Abu Dhabi on a fast-track to success, giving both the airline and city global exposure."

Abu Dhabi Airports chief executive officer James Bennett said the Grand Prix is a huge event for Abu Dhabi and the airport.

"We have a spike in traffic in the build-up and after the race," he said.

He added that the Grand Prix also provides a challenge for the freight division as it handles the arrival and departure by cargo aircraft of all the teams' tonnes of equipment, including at least 24 F1 cars.

This is the third time the United Arab Emirates capital has held the Grand Prix, which Bennett said is always "a fun week" for the city.
