Southwest flies east - Southwest Airlines plans to begin services from Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, on 6 June, in its latest move into the US East Coast market. The low-fares airline will offer daily nonstop service to five cities: Baltimore/ Washington, Chicago Midway, Nashville, Orlando and Tampa. Raleigh/ Durham-based Midway Airlines has dropped plans to enter the Chicago and Nashville markets.

TWA reaches out - Trans World Airlines will launch daily services fromSt Louis to Richmond, Virginia, and Portland, Oregon, on 1 May, using McDonnell Douglas DC-9s and Boeing MD-80s.

US Airways eyes UK - US Airways is preparing to announce plans for service between Charlotte, North Carolina, and London Gatwick, after being granted "competitive" take-off and landing slots at the UK airport. The US Government awarded US Airways rights to the route over a year ago.

Continental delays - Continental Airlines has received US Department of Transportation approval to delay the start of its Cleveland, Ohio, to London Gatwick service to 30 June. The carrier's route authority was due to expire on 17 May.

FedEx ups Orlando - FedEx is to build a new sorting facility at Orlando Airport, Florida. It will spend $14.5 million and the airport authority $15.7 million. It should be ready for occupancy in June 2001.

Another Ozark - Startup carrier Ozark Air Lines has applied for an operating certificate, and plans to offer service from Columbia, Missouri, using two 32-seat Fairchild Dornier 328JETs. Initial destinations will be Chicago and Dallas. The carrier has no connection with the Ozark Air Lines that became part of TWA in 1986.
