RSK MiG has won a Slovakian defence ministry contract to restore the country's 18 MiG-29 fighters to airworthy condition. The aircraft will also be upgraded to meet NATO standards and should be flying by 2004.

RSK MiG says the repair work will be done locally by Letetske Opravovne in Trenchin under Russian supervision. RSK MiG engineers have assessed the Slovakian aircraft and advised on extending aircraft lives.

Meanwhile, Yemen has taken delivery of 10 MiG-29s ordered in September. Up to five more MiG-29s are to be delivered shortly. The deal is worth around $300 million and includes upgrades to Yemen's ageing Mikoyan MiG-21s.

RSK group engine manufacturer, the Chernyshev factory in Moscow, has orders for 24 Klimov RD-33s for delivery this year. They are destined for Bulgaria and Yemen, and Sudan, which ordered 12 MiG-29s last year.

Others are apparently for Congo, which received Russian aircraft in the Soviet era, but is not a known MiG-29 operator.
