The Russian Air Launch company has revealed details of a commercial launch system, Polyot, capable of delivering payloads of up to 400kg (880lb) into low-Earth orbit after being dropped from an Antonov An-124 transport aircraft.

The first launch of the rocket could take place as early as 2003 if the $100 million development funding can be raised.

The rocket, based on a modified ballistic missile, would be built by the Progress design bureau and powered by an NK-33 first- stage engine and an upper stage with an 11-D58MFB engine.

The payload cost is estimated at $4,800 per kilo.
