Russia banned all flights from 1 July by passenger aircraft not fitted with Kopsas-Sarsat emergency radio beacons, in line with a 1999 International Civil Aviation Organisation ruling.

Every aircraft must have at least two beacons, which provide position information via satellite for aircraft that have crashed or are in distress.

The ruling is expected to affect up to 190 aircraft, mostly Tupolev Tu-134s and Tu-154s. Airlines most affected are regionals Dalavia, Izhavia, Karat and Yamal. Foreign aircraft without beacons are also banned.
