Russia's Federal Aviation Service has withdrawn the operating licences of 16 airlines. The reasons for the withdrawals have not been given but action of this type usually relates to financial or operational weaknesses.

Among those grounded were regional scheduled carriers Aerolat, Elista Avia and Kurgan Avia, cargo operators Magadan Aerogruz and Merkuri Avia, and charter airlines Ingushepia Avia and Korsar.

The withdrawal of the licences follows a decision earlier this year by Russia's aviation authorities to rationalise airline numbers.
