A Russian Mil Mi-8MTV-1 helicopter has been deployed to the Australian state of Victoria to join the battle to fight the country's bushfires. With a maximum external lift capacity of 5t, the Mi-8 is the most capable firefighting helicopter in the southern hemisphere. It has been supplied by New Zealand company Heli Harvest. More than 30 aircraft battled the fires, including Erickson S-64F Aircranes, fixed-wing fire bombers such as PZL-Mielec M-18 Dromaders and Air Tractor AT-802s, as well as helicopters.
