Russia's navy plans to acquire four Beriev A42 Albatros (Be-200) amphibians between 2010 and 2013 for reconnaissance, targeting and search and rescue duties, and is interested in an anti-submarine warfare variant to be equipped with the Sea Dragon mission suite. The development could prove significant for the Be-200's export prospects, as China has also shown interest in a military version optimised for ASW and SAR duties. Pending the availability of the new type, the navy intends to maintain its eight remaining Be-12 flying boats until 2015, upgrading them with improved avionics and surveillance equipment.
