Eurocontrol again demonstrates its capacity for self-aggrandisement with the implementation of reduced vertical separation minima (RVSM) in Europe (Flight International, 29 January - 4 February 2002). RVSM was introduced for air traffic control's benefit, in order to shoehorn more aircraft into a finite volume of air, and any benefits for aircraft operators are incidental.

RVSM preparation has cost aircraft operators a lot of money, and payback in direct operating cost savings will come in years not days.
